Keynote 1: IoT for utilities: finally convergence of IT and OT

Abstract

The presentation will explore, using real case studies, how the emergence of IoT changes the end to end solutions used by utilities for smart metering, smart grid and even smart cities. The first change is for Smart Metering. This change is happening in the communications layer with the Low Power Wide Area Networks solutions, as well as at the enablement and application platform levels. It also impacts the delivery model with more services in the cloud. Beyond smart metering, utilities are moving to IoT also for asset management and grid control. The use of some transverse solution for the IoT platform allows utilities to explore synergies between silos. The management of LV grid and microgrids is one example. Smart cities solution providing street lighting, traffic management and energy management is another example.

Régis Hourdouillie has been working in the telecommunications and power utilities sectors for more than 20 years. A recognized smart grid expert, he joined the Energy & Utilities team of Ericsson, one of the world ICT leaders, in October 2011. After acting as the global offering lead for grid communications and control, he is now Head of the Utility solution line.

After 2 years with Alcatel in Australia, Régis Hourdouillie joined the R&D Division of French Utility EDF in 1992. He managed several projects and headed a team working on telecommunications solutions for monitoring and control of transmission and distribution power systems. Régis Hourdouillie was an expert in international bodies UCTE, IEC TC57 and UCA Forum on behalf of EDF. In 2000, after taking his MBA, he joined the strategy consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton (now Booz and Co). He worked on various strategy assignments in the telecommunications and power industry in Europe. From 2004 to 2006, Régis Hourdouillie worked for an international Medium Size Enterprise as Strategic Marketing Director. Cumulating the function of General Manager for Southern Europe, he also performed the restructuring of the French subsidiary. Previous to Ericsson, Régis Hourdouillie spent 5 years with AREVA T&D / ALSTOM GRID where he headed the Telecommunications Products activity (2006/2007) before managing the company smart grid program (strategy, R&D investment, demonstration projects).

Régis HOURDOUILLIE holds an Engineering degree from Ecole Centrale de Lyon (France), a Master of Electrical Engineering from Cornell University (USA), a Master of Telecommunications Engineering from Ecole Nationale des Télécommunications (Paris) and a Master of Business Administration from HEC (France).

Keynote 2: On Modeling and Performance Evaluations of Multi-hop Wireless Networks

Abstract:

There has been a great deal of work on multi-hop mobile wireless networks and protocol issues, and research is ongoing to expand the scope and quality of service of these networks. The performance of multi-hop mobile wireless networks is normally evaluated via simulation over a fixed time horizon using a steady-state type of statistical analysis procedure. However, due to the dynamic nature of the network topology such an approach may be inappropriate in many cases as the network may spend most of the time in a transient or nonstationary state. The credibility of simulation studies of multi-hop wireless networks have to be evaluated. On the other hand, with the increasing of the number of the mobile nodes, the computational cost of a discrete event simulation will be increasing tremendously. When incorporating a newly developed wireless network protocol into such a discrete event simulation, it usually can only evaluate a network scenario with a small number of nodes. Scalability is another of the most important issues on simulations of multi-hop mobile wireless networks. In this talk, we discuss the fundamental problems on credibility and scalability of simulations of multi-hop mobile wireless networks, by looking at the specific issues related to the traditional approaches on simulation modeling of multi-hop wireless networks. For improving the credibility and scalability of multi-hop wireless network performance evaluations, we further present a new performance modeling framework and detailed techniques for analyzing the time varying performance of mobile wireless networks. We demonstrate the performance modeling framework for dynamic behavior of mobile wireless networks, and show the possible extensions to the basic model, include incorporating energy consumption, interference and propagation effects into the hybrid modeling framework to improve its fidelity.

Dr Yi Qian


Yi Qian received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Clemson University. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Prior to joining UNL, he worked in the telecommunications industry, academia, and the government. Some of his previous professional positions include serving as a senior member of scientific staff and a technical advisor at Nortel Networks, a senior systems engineer and a technical advisor at several start-up companies, an assistant professor at University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, and a senior researcher at National Institute of Standards and Technology. His research interests include information assurance and network security, network design, network modeling, simulation and performance analysis for next generation wireless networks, wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks, vehicular networks, smart grid communication networks, broadband satellite networks, optical networks, high-speed networks and the Internet. He has a successful track record to lead research teams and to publish research results in leading scientific journals and conferences. Dr. Yi Qian is a member of ACM and a senior member of IEEE. He is serving on the editorial board for several international journals and magazines, including serving as the Associate Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine. He is a Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. He is serving as the Technical Program Committee Chair for IEEE International Conference on Communications 2018.
